Customer: Delhi State Cooperative Bank Ltd.
Challenge Delhi State Cooperative Bank Ltd. needed to adapt its web-based core banking application to run on thin clients across its network of 40 branches. The application was originally developed for the Internet Explorer (IE) browser, and the bank now needed it to work with Linux-based browsers, which required a major system overhaul.
Requirements: The project had to meet several key requirements:
-
Application Compatibility: The core banking application needed to render correctly on the Linux-based thin clients, maintaining its functionality and appearance.
-
Printer Support: The solution had to support printers that lack original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Linux drivers, so that day-to-day banking operations, including printing documents, could continue without interruption.
-
UI Customizations: To streamline operations, the bank required custom user interface (UI) modifications that launch the core banking application automatically at login.
-
Embedded Office Applications: The new system needed to include embedded office applications for everyday tasks.
Products Used: The bank used the following product to address these challenges.
Linux-based Firmware for Thin Clients: Linux-based thin client firmware from Thinvent formed the core of the solution. This firmware connected the bank’s existing web-based core banking application with the Linux-based thin client environment.
Results: The implementation of Thinvent's Linux-based firmware produced several significant outcomes.
-
Application Compatibility: The firmware allowed the bank’s core banking application to work correctly on the Linux-based thin clients, which removed compatibility issues that could have disrupted banking operations.
-
Printer Support: The system supported the bank's printers reliably, even without OEM Linux drivers. Staff could print essential documents without interruption and continue to serve customers.
-
UI Customizations: The customised UI launches the core banking application automatically, which simplifies the user experience and speeds up daily operations.
-
Embedded Office Applications: With office applications built into the system, the bank’s staff can handle daily tasks and documents efficiently, which improved productivity.
-
Cost Savings: The virus-free and maintenance-free Linux environment on the transaction terminals improved security and reliability and significantly reduced the cost of supporting remote branches.
Future Scope
As Delhi State Cooperative Bank Ltd. continues to grow, the successful deployment of the Linux-based firmware offers the following opportunities:
Expansion: The bank can license more copies of the firmware for new branches, so that these branches use the same core banking system. Legacy System Replacement: The bank can gradually replace older PCs in existing branches with thin clients running the Linux-based firmware, bringing those branches onto the same secure and cost-effective technology. With this solution, Delhi State Cooperative Bank Ltd. has resolved its immediate challenges and positioned itself for sustained growth, improved efficiency and reduced operational costs.
