Modelled thermal performance and sustained processor power of the Thinvent IPC1 Industrial PC

Will the fanless IPC1 run on your factory floor, in a kiosk or in a control cabinet?

  • Intel N100: Runs continuously at its 6 W TDP in rooms up to 50 °C. In a 35 °C room, the case can dissipate 31 W, five times the N100's 6 W. At 6 W in a 35 °C room, the hottest point on the case is 48 °C.
  • Intel N95: Runs continuously at its 15 W TDP in rooms up to 50 °C. In a 35 °C room, the case can dissipate 35 W, more than twice the N95's 15 W. At 15 W in a 35 °C room, the hottest point on the case is 59 °C.
  • Intel N5095: Runs continuously at its 15 W TDP in rooms up to 50 °C. In a 35 °C room, the case can dissipate 35 W, more than twice the N5095's 15 W. At 15 W in a 35 °C room, the hottest point on the case is 59 °C.
  • AMD Ryzen 5 7530U: Runs continuously at its 15 W default TDP in rooms up to 50 °C. In a 35 °C room, the case can dissipate 28 W, nearly twice the processor's 15 W. At 15 W in a 35 °C room, the hottest point on the case is 59 °C.
  • Fanless: The IPC1 does not have a fan, so dust and lint cannot clog one.
  • Touching the case: At full load the finned cover gets hot to the touch. Mount the IPC1 where people do not rest a hand on it.

Heat the case can dissipate across room temperatures

Heat the case can dissipate across room temperatures
The dashed line is the most processor heat the case can dissipate before the processor reaches its temperature limit. The solid line is the processor's power: 6 W for the N100 and 15 W for the other three, as their makers rate them. The IPC1 stands on a desk in still air, and the heat of the rest of the board is included. With the Intel N100, the case can dissipate 40 W in a 15 °C room and 24 W in a 50 °C room. With the Intel N95, it can dissipate 44 W and 27 W. With the Intel N5095, it can dissipate 45 W and 28 W. With the AMD Ryzen 5 7530U, it can dissipate 38 W and 20 W. The Ryzen's limit is 90 °C, lower than the 105 °C of the Intel processors.

How warm the IPC1 body gets

How warm the IPC1 body gets
The hottest point on the outer case against processor power, up to each processor's rated power, in 25, 35 and 45 °C rooms. The case warms by about 1.3 °C for each extra watt.

Hottest outer surface by processor power and room temperature

Hottest outer surface by processor power and room temperature
Each cell gives the hottest point on the case for one processor power and one room temperature, up to each processor's rated power. At these powers, every processor stays below its temperature limit in rooms up to 45 °C.

The top cover and the base of each configuration at its base power in a 35 °C room. Each view shows the whole surface and a zoom on the warmest point. The cover shows its 45 fins in dark and the gaps between them in light.

Inside the IPC1 with the Intel N100
A section along the depth through the processor, at 6 W in a 35 °C room. It cuts across the grooved cover fins. An aluminium block the size of the whole processor package stands on the processor and reaches the cover. A thermal pad joins the underside of the board, behind the processor, to the base. The processor reaches 53 °C. The blue arrows show the direction of the slow air loops inside the case. The model does not compute that flow. The orange arrows show warm air rising off the fins.

The same section at 15 W. The board's own finned heatsink stays on the processor, without its fan. A round aluminium block of about 55 mm joins the heatsink to the cover. The same thermal pad is under the board. The processor reaches 69 °C.
