Modelled thermal performance of the fanless Thinvent Neo S Thin Client

Will the fanless Neo S run at your ticket counter, reception desk or branch office?

  • Intel Celeron J1900: Runs continuously at its 10 W TDP in rooms up to 40 °C. In a 35 °C room, the case can dissipate 11 W. In a 45 °C room, the processor lowers its power consumption to 9.5 W.
  • How warm the case gets: At 10 W in a 35 °C room, the hottest point on the case is 49 °C, and the processor reaches 99 °C, below its 105 °C limit.
  • Fanless: The Neo S does not have a fan. The board's own finned heat sink is under slots in the lid, and the base has slots under the processor.
  • Placement: Keep the lid and the area under the base clear, so that air can pass through the slots.

Heat the case can dissipate across room temperatures

Heat the case can dissipate across room temperatures
The dashed line is the most processor heat the case can dissipate before the processor reaches its 105 °C limit. The solid line is the processor's power, up to its 10 W TDP as Intel rates it. The Neo S stands on a desk in still air, and the heat of the rest of the board is included. The case can dissipate 14 W in a 15 °C room and 8.7 W in a 50 °C room. The model treats the case as closed, so the air that passes through the slots adds cooling that these figures do not count.

The hottest point on the outer case against processor power, up to the 10 W TDP, in 25, 35 and 45 °C rooms. The case warms by about 1 °C for each extra watt.

Each cell gives the hottest point on the case for one processor power and one room temperature. A second figure in a cell is the power the processor lowers its power consumption to, to stay at its limit. Only the 10 W cell in a 45 °C room shows one: the processor runs at 9.5 W there.

The lid and the base at 10 W in a 35 °C room. The lid reaches 48.5 °C at its warmest point and 46 °C on average. The base reaches 49 °C under the processor and 47 °C on average. The light rectangles are the slots in the lid and the base.
