What is IEC 61851?
IEC 61851 is an international standard for conductive charging systems for electric road vehicles. IEC 61851-1:2017 is the foundational part of the standard. It applies to EV supply equipment with a rated supply voltage up to 1,000 V AC or up to 1,500 V DC, and a rated output voltage up to 1,000 V AC or up to 1,500 V DC.
What the Standard Covers
IEC 61851-1 defines the basic requirements for conductive charging systems. These include electrical safety, communication between the EV and the charging equipment, and compatibility of components within the charging system. It also defines classifications, test requirements and performance criteria for EV supply equipment. IEC 61851-21-1 covers the conductive connection of an electric vehicle to an AC or DC supply, and applies to on-board charging units.
Key Applications
Charging equipment built to IEC 61851 is used for electric road vehicles, including plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs). Charging station controllers and EV supply equipment need to process charging-mode logic, safety checks and communication with the vehicle. Industrial computers with fanless operation, wide-temperature components and serial and LAN interfaces are commonly used as the control layer in such systems.
