What Is a Cloud-Based System?
A cloud-based system is any computing setup where the applications, data and processing power live on remote servers rather than on the device in front of the user. The local machine — whether a desktop, laptop, thin client or industrial PC — acts mainly as a secure window onto that remote environment: it renders the screen, captures keyboard and mouse input, and streams everything else over the network. Common delivery models include Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS), Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) sessions, browser-based SaaS applications, and edge-to-cloud gateways that push sensor or machine data upward.
Because the heavy lifting happens in the data centre, the endpoint does not need a large CPU, a big SSD or a discrete GPU. What it does need is a stable wired network link, enough memory to run a modern remote-client OS smoothly, and hardware that stays reliable for years without constant attention. That shift in priorities is exactly why thin clients and low-power mini PCs have become the default endpoints for cloud deployments.
