What Is an Industrial PC?

An industrial PC (IPC) is a computing platform engineered for environments where a standard office desktop or consumer mini PC would struggle. The difference is not raw speed — it is thermal design, power input tolerance, mounting options, connector retention and long-term component availability. Industrial computers are typically rated for wide operating temperature ranges, run from 12V or 24V DC inputs, and are designed to be mounted inside cabinets, on DIN rails, or on production equipment rather than sitting on a desk.

Because these systems often run unattended for years, fanless chassis design matters. Removing the fan eliminates the single most common mechanical failure point and stops the unit from pulling dust, metal particles and airborne contaminants into the enclosure. A properly designed fanless IPC uses the chassis itself as a heatsink, spreading heat away from the processor through a direct-contact thermal path.

Some integrators prefer to image their own operating system and order hardware without an OS preinstalled, which keeps the software stack fully under their control.
