Gateworks Sbc

What Is a Gateworks SBC?

Gateworks designs and manufactures ARM-based industrial single board computers (SBCs) for rugged, embedded and wireless applications. Their boards are built around NXP i.MX processors — for example, the Venice GW7100/GW7200/GW7300/GW7400 family uses the i.MX 8M Mini and i.MX 8M Plus SoCs, while the newer Catalina GW9200/GW9400 family uses the NXP i.MX 95. Typical characteristics include industrial temperature ratings (often -40°C to +85°C), long-life availability of 10+ years, and expansion through Mini-PCIe or M.2 sockets for cellular, Wi-Fi and satellite modems.

SBCs vs. Boxed Industrial PCs

A single board computer is a bare board: you supply the enclosure, power conditioning, storage, cabling and thermal design, then integrate it into your own product. That flexibility is valuable for OEMs building a device around the board, but it means additional engineering, certification and assembly work before anything can be deployed. A boxed industrial PC takes the same class of industrial-grade silicon and delivers it as a finished, mountable unit — chassis, cooling, I/O ports, power input and validated operating system already in place.

Aspect Bare SBC Boxed Industrial PC
Integration effort High — enclosure, harness, thermals Low — mount and power on
Expansion Mini-PCIe / M.2 sockets Serial, USB, HDMI, Ethernet, GPIO
Thermal design Engineer's responsibility Fanless chassis included
OS support Board support package / Yocto Windows 11 Pro, Linux, DOS
Time to deploy Weeks to months Days

Where Each Approach Fits

SBCs suit high-volume OEM products where the board becomes part of a custom assembly, and where wireless module flexibility (LTE, 5G, Wi-Fi, GNSS) is central to the design. Boxed industrial computers suit plant-floor control, kiosks, digital signage, gateways, edge data collection, laboratory instruments and building automation — anywhere a self-contained, serviceable unit with standard ports is more practical than an open board.

Choosing the Right Platform

Start from the workload, not the form factor. Lightweight data logging and protocol conversion can run on low-power Intel Celeron or N-series processors with 4–8 GB RAM. Machine vision, multi-camera analytics or virtualisation benefit from Core i3/i5 class CPUs, 16–32 GB RAM and NVMe storage. In every case, confirm the operating temperature range, the number of serial and Ethernet ports required, and whether the operating system must be Windows, Linux or none at all.

Thinvent Products for Industrial Deployments

Thinvent builds fanless industrial computers, mini PCs, thin clients and all-in-one PCs for customers worldwide — an alternative to bare-board SBC integration when a finished, mountable system is preferred. The IPC3 series pairs Intel Core i3-1215U processors (6 cores, up to 4.4 GHz, 10 MB cache) with up to 16 GB DDR4 RAM and 1 TB SSD storage, and is available with Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 IoT Value, DOS, Ubuntu or Thinux Embedded Linux. Quad DB9 serial variants support legacy equipment and industrial protocols, while fanless chassis design keeps systems running reliably in dusty, hot or vibration-prone environments.
