Hot Dre

What "Hot DRE" Means for Industrial Computing

In industrial deployments, "hot" and "DRE" (dust, rough, and extreme environments) describe the conditions that break ordinary commercial computers: ambient temperatures that climb past 40 °C inside an enclosure, airborne dust and metal particles, vibration on machine frames, and continuous 24/7 duty cycles. A standard office desktop or consumer mini PC is typically rated for a narrow comfort band and relies on a fan that pulls in the very dust and heat it is trying to escape. Industrial computers are engineered from the ground up for these conditions.

How Industrial PCs Handle Heat and Dust

The defining design choice is fanless (passive) cooling. Instead of a fan-driven airflow path, heat is conducted from the processor through a metal heat spreader into a finned aluminium chassis that dissipates it into the surrounding air. Because there is no intake fan, there is no path for dust, lint, or conductive particles to enter the enclosure — a major cause of failure in food processing, textile, woodworking, and metalworking plants. Solid-state storage (SSD) removes the other moving part, and wide-input DC power adapters tolerate the voltage sags common on factory floors.

Requirement Typical Office PC Industrial Fanless PC
Cooling Fan + vents Passive, chassis heat sink
Dust ingress Open airflow path Sealed enclosure
Duty cycle 8 hours/day 24/7 continuous
Mounting Desk only DIN rail, VESA, panel, wall
I/O Consumer ports Serial (RS-232/485), GPIO, dual LAN
Power Fixed AC adapter Wide-range DC input

Typical Use Cases

Fanless industrial PCs are deployed where a computer must sit next to the process rather than in an air-conditioned office. Common applications include SCADA and HMI terminals, CNC and PLC supervisory stations, production line data logging, vision inspection, weighbridge and batching control, Kiosk and digital signage, and telecom or network edge cabinets. Many of these sites also need legacy serial connectivity, which is why multi-port DB9 RS-232/RS-485 configurations remain in demand alongside modern USB and HDMI outputs.

Choosing the Right Configuration

When specifying for a hot, dusty site, prioritise three things: a fanless chassis, an SSD rather than a spinning disk, and enough CPU headroom to run your application without thermal throttling. Intel® Core™ i3 and Celeron/N-series processors cover most HMI, data-logging, and edge workloads, while higher-core i5 options suit multi-camera vision or virtualisation. Memory from 8 GB to 32 GB and storage from 128 GB to 1 TB let you match the unit to the software stack, and operating system choice — Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 IoT, Ubuntu Linux, or a DOS/no-OS image — determines how much you customise on site.

Thinvent Industrial Computers for Demanding Environments

Thinvent builds fanless industrial PCs, mini PCs, thin clients, and all-in-one PCs designed for continuous operation in hot, dusty, and vibration-prone settings. Our IPC range pairs Intel® processors (Celeron, N-series, Core™ i3 and i5, 7th to 14th generation) with sealed aluminium chassis, SSD storage, wide-range DC inputs, and options for dual Gigabit Ethernet, multiple HDMI outputs, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB-C, and quad DB9 serial ports. Units can be supplied with Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 IoT, Ubuntu Linux 24.04 LTS, FreeDOS, or without an operating system, so you can standardise on whatever your plant already runs.
