What Is an Industrial PC?

An industrial PC (IPC) is a computing platform engineered for continuous operation in environments where a standard desktop or office PC would quickly fail. Instead of plastic enclosures and small fans that pull in dust, industrial computers use metal chassis, wide-temperature components, and fanless or filtered cooling to survive heat, vibration, dust, and electrical noise on a factory floor or in a remote cabinet.

The difference is not only the enclosure. Industrial PCs are specified for long product lifecycles, stable I/O layouts, wide DC input ranges, watchdog timers, and DIN-rail or wall mounting. They are typically deployed where the machine they control must keep running — production lines, kiosks, edge gateways, access-control panels, and building-management nodes.

Key Specifications to Consider

When selecting an industrial PC, the specification that matters most is usually I/O and thermal design, not raw clock speed. A modern 12th-generation Intel® Core™ i3 processor such as the i3-1215U, for example, packs 6 cores (performance plus efficiency cores), up to 4.4 GHz turbo frequency and 10 MB of cache — more than enough for SCADA clients, machine vision pre-processing, or multiple browser-based dashboards, while still fitting into a compact passively cooled chassis.

Specification Typical Industrial PC Range Why It Matters
Processor Intel® Celeron®, N-series, Core™ i3/i5, 12th–14th gen Balances performance per watt and long-term availability
Memory 8 GB – 32 GB DDR4/DDR5 Headroom for multiple applications and VMs
