An industrial computer is a computing platform engineered to run continuously in environments where a standard office desktop or consumer mini PC would quickly fail. The difference is not only in the processor or memory; it is in the thermal design, power input range, mechanical mounting, and component selection. Industrial PCs are typically fanless, sealed against dust and airborne particulates, rated for wider ambient temperature ranges, and designed to be mounted on a DIN rail, VESA plate, or inside a control cabinet. They are built to keep running for years, not to be replaced every upgrade cycle.

Operating system choice matters too — Windows 11 Pro for standard enterprise software, Windows 11 IoT for long-term servicing, Ubuntu Linux 24.04 LTS for open-source stacks, FreeDOS or no OS for customers who image their own builds.

Selecting the right platform comes down to three questions: how much compute the application actually needs, how harsh the environment is, and how long the deployment must be supported.
