Mini PC Media Server: Intel and AMD Options

What Is a Mini PC Media Server?

A mini PC media server is a compact computer that stores your media library and streams video, music and photos to other devices on your network. Media server software such as Plex or Jellyfin runs on the mini PC. The processor, memory and storage determine how many streams the server can handle and whether it can convert video on the fly.

Key Hardware Requirements

Basic media serving needs less hardware than most buyers expect. Direct play, where the playing device supports the file format, uses little processing power. Transcoding, where the server converts a video to a different format or resolution, uses much more. Plan for these factors:

  • Processor: More cores and higher clock speeds handle more simultaneous transcoded streams. Intel Core processors with integrated graphics are commonly used for hardware-accelerated transcoding.

  • Memory: 8 GB suits light home use. 16 GB gives more room for the operating system, the media server software and multiple streams.

  • Storage: An SSD runs the operating system and server software quickly. Store the media library on large drives or network storage.

  • Network: A wired Ethernet connection gives the most consistent streaming. Dual LAN models can separate the media network from other traffic.

Model Processor Cores Max Frequency Memory Storage Wireless
Aero Mini PC (i3-1215U) Intel Core i3-1215U 6 4.4 GHz 8 GB DDR4 256 GB SSD No WiFi / Dual Band WiFi
Aero Mini PC (i5-1335U) Intel Core i5-1335U 10 4.6 GHz 16 GB DDR4 512 GB SSD No WiFi
Aero Mini PC (i7-1255U) Intel Core i7-1255U 10 4.7 GHz 16 GB DDR4 256 GB SSD No WiFi, Dual LAN
Aero Mini PC (Core 5 120U) Intel Core 5 120U 10 5.0 GHz 16 GB DDR4 512 GB SSD Dual Band WiFi
Treo Mini PC (Ryzen 5 7430U) AMD Ryzen 5 7430U 6 4.3 GHz 16 GB or 8 GB DDR4 512 GB or 256 GB SSD Dual Band WiFi
Treo Mini PC (N5095A) Intel N5095A 4 2.9 GHz 4 GB DDR4 128 GB SSD No WiFi
Micro 6 Pro Mini PC ARM Cortex A55 4 1.9 GHz 4 GB 32 GB eMMC Dual Antenna WiFi

For a small household that streams to one or two devices, the Treo Mini PC with the N5095A or the Aero Mini PC with the Core i3-1215U covers the basic need. For many simultaneous transcoded streams, choose a model with more cores and 16 GB of memory, such as the Aero Mini PC with the Core i5-1335U or the Core i7-1255U.

Choosing the Right Model

Match the model to the number of streams and the amount of transcoding you expect. Direct-play media needs only a light processor. Mixed or high-resolution libraries that need conversion need the higher core counts listed above. The Thinvent range does not include a model with a discrete graphics card; the Aero and Treo models use integrated graphics.

Thinvent Mini PCs for Media Servers

Thinvent has Intel Core, Intel N-series, AMD Ryzen and ARM mini PCs. The Aero Mini PC models suit media servers that need more cores and memory, and the Treo Mini PC models suit lighter home servers. Each model is available with Windows 11 Pro, Ubuntu Linux or without an operating system.
