What an Industrial PC Is

An industrial PC (IPC) is a computer built for environments and duty cycles that a standard office desktop or consumer mini PC was never designed to survive. Where a commercial PC assumes a clean desk, stable mains power and a comfortable room temperature, an industrial PC assumes dust, vibration, wide temperature swings, long continuous runtimes and 24/7 operation. The result is a machine with a rugged chassis, a wide-input DC power stage, protected I/O and components selected for longevity rather than peak benchmark scores.

Key Specifications to Evaluate

When specifying a batch of industrial PCs — whether it is a single pilot unit or a rollout of a thousand — these are the parameters that decide whether the deployment succeeds:

Specification What to Look For Why It Matters
Processor Intel Celeron/N-series for light HMI duty, Core i3/i5 for multi-tasking and vision Determines how many applications and screens one unit can drive
Cores / Threads 4 to 12 cores More cores help with parallel PLC polling, logging and display tasks
Memory 8–16 GB DDR4 typical, 32–64 GB for heavy workloads Headroom for databases, SCADA and virtualised sessions
Storage 128 GB to 1 TB SSD Silent, shock-resistant storage for shop-floor vibration
Cooling Fanless passive heatsink designs No moving parts means no dust ingestion and no filter servicing
Power Input Wide-range DC input (e.g. 12 V, with adapter or direct DC) Tolerates real-world supply variation in panels and cabinets
Serial I/O RS-232/485 via DB9 ports Still the backbone of PLCs, meters, weighbridges and legacy machines
Networking Dual Gigabit Ethernet Separates plant network from enterprise or camera traffic
Mounting DIN-rail, VESA or wall-mount options Fits inside existing control cabinets
