What Is an N305 PC?

An N305 PC is a compact computer built around the Intel® Processor N305, a member of Intel's Alder Lake-N family of efficient processors. These systems are designed for buyers who need dependable everyday computing performance — point-of-sale terminals, kiosks, digital signage, office desktops, and light industrial control — without the power draw, heat, and fan noise of a full desktop CPU. Because the N305 runs cool under typical loads, it is a natural fit for fanless, dust-resistant chassis designs that keep running quietly for years.

Intel® Processor N305: Key Specifications

The N305 sits at the top of Intel's N-series (Alder Lake-N) lineup, above the familiar N95, N100, and N150 models. It uses a hybrid core layout with 8 efficient cores, giving it strong multi-threaded throughput for its power class, and it is built on Intel's 7nm-class process for low energy use.

Feature Intel® Processor N305
Cores / Threads 8 cores / 8 threads
Max Turbo Frequency Up to 3.8 GHz
Cache 6 MB Intel® Smart Cache
Base Power ~15 W
Memory Support DDR4 / DDR5 (platform dependent)
Integrated Graphics Intel® UHD Graphics (up to 32 EUs)
Typical Use Mini PCs, thin clients, industrial PCs, kiosks

The combination of eight cores and a low thermal envelope means an N305 system can handle several applications at once — a browser with many tabs, a POS application, inventory software, and background sync — while remaining cool enough for a sealed, fanless enclosure.

Where N305 Systems Fit Best

N305-based computers are commonly deployed where reliability matters more than raw clock speed:

  • Retail and hospitality: POS terminals, self-service kiosks, and back-office terminals.

  • Industrial and factory floors: HMI panels, data logging, and machine monitoring where dust and vibration are present.

  • Digital signage: Continuous video playback and content scheduling in fanless enclosures.

  • Thin client and VDI setups: Lightweight endpoints for virtual desktops and remote sessions.

  • Edge and IoT gateways: Collecting sensor data and forwarding it to cloud or on-premise systems.

For these roles, the N305's eight cores provide noticeably more headroom than quad-core N-series chips, while still allowing compact, ventless designs.

Choosing the Right N305 Configuration

When specifying an N305 PC, match the configuration to the workload. For thin client and kiosk duty, 8 GB of RAM and a 128–256 GB SSD is usually sufficient. For industrial control or multi-application desktops, 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB or 1 TB SSD gives more room for local data and logs. Operating system choice matters too: Windows 11 Pro or Windows 11 IoT for standard business software, Ubuntu Linux or embedded Linux for kiosks and gateways, and FreeDOS or no-OS options for buyers who deploy their own image. Dual Gigabit Ethernet ports are valuable in gateway and network-appliance roles.

Thinvent's Products Featuring This Technology

Thinvent builds fanless industrial computers, mini PCs, thin clients, and all-in-one PCs using Intel's efficient N-series and Core™ processors, engineered for continuous operation in dusty, hot, and space-constrained environments. Our N-series mini PCs and industrial PCs are available with a range of memory, SSD, and operating system options, and can be configured for POS, kiosk, signage, and industrial control deployments. If you need help matching an N305-class system — or a higher-performance Core™ i3 or i5 model — to your application, our team can advise on the right form factor and configuration for your site.
