What Does "Network Attached Storage USB" Mean?

Network Attached Storage (NAS) is a system that shares files over a network instead of attaching a disk directly to one computer. The "USB" part of the query usually refers to one of two things: a NAS device that expands its capacity by attaching external USB drives, or a small computer that is turned into a NAS by plugging USB storage into it and sharing that storage over SMB, NFS, or FTP. In both cases the result is the same — files live on a disk that any authorised device on the LAN can read and write, without copying data between machines by hand.

USB is attractive for NAS work because it is bus-powered, hot-swappable, and universally supported. The speed of the link matters more than most people expect:
