What Is the PC 9801?

The term "PC 9801" refers to a specific model within the PC-9800 series (commonly shortened to PC-98), a lineup of Japanese 16-bit and 32-bit personal computers manufactured by NEC from 1982 to 2003. The "9801" designation was used for many of the most widely deployed models in this family, which established NEC's dominance in the Japanese personal computer market — by 1999, more than 18 million units had been sold, and the platform held over 60% market share in Japan by 1991.

Architecture and Technical Notes

Although the PC-9800 series was based on standard x86-16 and x86-32 processors, NEC used an in-house architecture that was not compatible with IBM clones. Some PC-98 machines used NEC's own V30 processor, a CMOS implementation of the 8086 instruction set. This proprietary design allowed the platform to handle Japan's multiple writing systems — particularly kanji with its thousands of characters — far better than early IBM-compatible machines, whose graphics capabilities were insufficient for the task.

The platform could run ported and localized versions of MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows. However, because it was a non-IBM-compatible x86 system, software had to be coded separately for it. As Windows spread and developers no longer needed to target each platform individually, the advantage of the proprietary architecture faded. NEC moved away from PC-98 compatibility in 1997, releasing the PC98-NX series of Wintel computers based on the PC System Design Guide.
