What is an industrial PC?
An industrial PC (IPC) is a computer built to run continuously in factories, control rooms, machine cells and other demanding sites. It is designed for dust, heat, vibration and long operating hours. Industrial PCs also include the interfaces that plant equipment and networks use, such as LAN ports and serial ports.
Key specifications
The Thinvent IPC5 uses the Intel® Core™ i7-1255U processor from the 12th generation i7 series. The processor has 10 cores, a maximum frequency of 4.7 GHz and 12 MB of cache. Each unit has 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and a 1 TB SSD. It includes dual LAN ports and runs on a 12V 7A adapter. The IPC5 has no WiFi.
Configurations
The IPC5 range covers four operating system options and two I/O options:
| Operating system | Standard I/O | With Quad DB9 Serial |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 Professional | Yes | Yes |
| Windows 11 Pro | Yes | Yes |
| Windows 11 IoT Value | Yes | Yes |
| DOS | Yes | Yes |
| Thinux™ Embedded Linux | Yes | Yes |
All configurations share the same processor, memory, storage and dual LAN ports. The Quad DB9 Serial option adds four DB9 serial ports for connecting serial devices.
Use cases
Industrial PCs like the IPC5 suit machine control, data acquisition, factory automation and equipment monitoring. Dual LAN ports let the unit connect to two networks, such as a plant network and a machine network. Serial ports connect to legacy instruments and controllers that use RS-232 communication. The choice of operating system depends on the software the application requires.
