What Are PRS and UTS?
PRS stands for Passenger Reservation System, and UTS stands for Unreserved Ticketing System. Both are large-scale computerised ticketing platforms originally developed for Indian Railways and now widely studied and adapted by transit operators around the world. PRS handles reserved, seat-allocated journeys — advance booking, berth allocation, cancellation, refunds and enquiry. UTS handles unreserved or "general" class travel, where tickets are issued on demand at counters and through self-service terminals, typically for journeys up to 30 days in advance.
The best-known PRS implementation is CONCERT (Country-wide Network for Computerised Enhanced Reservation and Ticketing), developed by CRIS. It runs on a centralised server architecture with databases synchronised across regional nodes, supporting booking "from anywhere to anywhere," bilingual ticket printing, and sub-second local transaction response times.
