What Does "RAS Computer" Mean?
In computing, RAS is an acronym for Reliability, Availability and Serviceability — the three engineering properties that determine whether a computer can be trusted to keep running in a production environment. A "RAS computer" is therefore any system designed, built and validated around those three pillars rather than around peak benchmark scores. The term is used widely in telecommunications, banking, factory automation, healthcare and utility SCADA, where a reboot is not an inconvenience but an outage.
(Note: RAS is also used as shorthand for Remote Access Server — the Windows RRAS role, dial-up/VPN concentrators and branch-office gateways. Many RAS servers in the field today are actually small fanless computers running routing, VPN or terminal-services workloads. The two meanings overlap more often than people expect.)
