What Are Embedded Solutions?

Embedded solutions are purpose-built computer systems designed to run a fixed set of tasks inside a larger machine, appliance or installation. Unlike a general-purpose desktop, an embedded computer is selected for long-term availability, predictable behaviour and the ability to run unattended for years. Typical building blocks include a low-power x86 or ARM processor, soldered or socketed memory, solid-state storage, a fanless thermal design, and an operating system image tailored to the application — often a trimmed Linux build or a locked-down Windows IoT edition.

Key Technical Considerations

When specifying an embedded platform, engineers usually weigh five things: thermal design, power input, I/O, operating system and lifecycle.

Requirement Why It Matters Typical Options
Cooling Dust, lint and grease kill fans in factory and outdoor cabinets Fanless
