What Is a Small Form Factor Case?
A small form factor (SFF) case is a compact enclosure for a computer. It holds a smaller motherboard, fewer expansion cards, and a reduced set of drive bays than a standard tower. Motherboard standards define the board size that a case can accept. Mini-ITX is the most common compact board standard, with dimensions of 170 x 170 mm. Micro-ATX is larger, and ATX is the standard full-size desktop board. A case rated for Mini-ITX will not reliably fit an ATX board.
Case sizes are grouped by the largest board they hold. Full tower and super tower cases fit E-ATX and ATX boards. Mid tower and mini tower cases fit ATX and Micro-ATX boards. SFF cases fit Mini-ITX boards and often use compact power supplies and low-profile cooling.
Key Specifications and Considerations
When choosing an SFF case, check these points:
-
Motherboard support: Confirm the case lists Mini-ITX or Micro-ATX support.
-
Expansion slots: Compact cases usually limit graphics cards to a shorter length and a smaller number of slots.
-
Power supply: Many SFF cases require an SFX or SFX-L power supply rather than a standard ATX unit.
-
Cooling: Restricted airflow means that CPU and GPU temperatures need to be checked after assembly.
-
Storage: Drive bays are limited, so plan for M.2 SSDs or a small number of 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drives.
Use Cases
Small form factor systems suit desks with limited space, home theater setups, office workstations, digital signage, kiosks, and industrial installations. Their smaller footprint and lower power draw make them practical where a full tower would be too large or too noisy.
Thinvent Mini PCs in Compact Configurations
Thinvent builds compact computers that fit small spaces and continuous-use environments. The range includes two platforms:
| Model | Processor | Cores | Max Frequency | Cache | Memory | Storage | OS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thinvent Micro 6 Pro Mini PC | ARM Cortex A55 | 4 | 1.9 GHz | 1 MB | 4 GB | 32 GB eMMC | Thinux Embedded Linux |
| Thinvent Treo Mini PC | Intel N5095A | 4 | 2.9 GHz | 4 MB | 16 GB DDR4 | 1 TB SSD | Windows 11 IoT or Windows 11 Pro |
The Micro 6 Pro includes dual antenna WiFi and one HDMI output. The Treo Mini PC has no WiFi and supports Windows 11. Both models are available with a Thinvent keyboard and mouse set, and the Micro 6 Pro is also available with a VESA mount and an HDMI to VGA cable.
The Thinvent range does not include a standard Mini-ITX tower case. Its mini PCs are complete systems that are themselves compact.
