A "small cabinet CPU" is a compact computer built to fit inside an electrical control cabinet, DIN-rail enclosure, kiosk housing or machine bay where a full-size desktop tower or rack server will not go. The defining requirements are physical: a small chassis footprint, low heat output, a DC power input rather than a mains PSU, and mounting options such as DIN rail, wall brackets or VESA plates. Just as importantly, the unit must tolerate the environment inside a cabinet — elevated ambient temperature, limited airflow, vibration and dust.

What Defines a Small Cabinet Computer

Compact cabinet computers typically use the same low-power processor families found in modern mini PCs, such as Intel® Celeron®, Intel® N-series (N95, N100, N150) and Intel® Core™ i3 / i5 mobile-class parts like the i3-1215U or i5-1335U. These chips deliver desktop-class responsiveness at 6–15 W typical TDP, which means they can be cooled passively with a machined aluminium heatsink instead of a fan.

Key technical characteristics of a cabinet-ready computer include:

  • Fanless, ventless or filtered chassis — no dust ingress, no fan bearing to wear out, no airflow path drawing contaminated cabinet air through the electronics.

  • Wide DC input — commonly 12 V DC, sometimes 9–36 V DC, so the unit can run from the same supply rail as other panel equipment.

  • Industrial I/O — multiple RS-232/RS-485 DB9 serial ports for PLCs, meters and legacy controllers; dual Gigabit Ethernet for network segmentation; USB 3.2 Gen 2 and USB-C for programming and peripherals.

  • Wide operating temperature — industrial-grade boards are validated for roughly 0–50
