Smallest Sff Cases

Small form factor (SFF) cases are compact computer housings built to hold a full desktop system in a fraction of the volume of a tower. A buyer looking for the smallest SFF case is usually trying to fit a working PC into a tight space: a shop counter, a kiosk, a control cabinet, a reception desk or the back of a display. The practical answer is a mini PC, where the board, processor, memory and storage are built into a chassis small enough to sit behind a monitor or mount on a wall.

What Defines a Small SFF Case

The size of an SFF case is measured in volume and footprint. Mini PC chassis are typically under one litre, with footprints of roughly 10 to 13 cm square and heights of 3 to 5 cm. Inside, they use low-power mobile processors, SO-DIMM memory and M.2 or eMMC storage, which keeps heat output low and allows fanless or near-silent cooling. Power comes from an external adapter, so the case itself holds no bulky power supply.

Key details that matter when choosing the smallest case:

  • Processor class: U-series Intel Core chips and low-power ARM or Celeron parts run cool in small volumes.

  • Memory type: SO-DIMM DDR4 slots allow 4GB to 64GB in a small board area.

  • Storage: M.2 SSD or onboard eMMC removes the need for a 2.5-inch drive bay.

  • Mounting: VESA mounting holes let the unit attach to the rear of a monitor.

  • Power: an external 12V or 19V adapter keeps the chassis slim.

Choosing Between the Smallest Options

The smallest cases trade expansion for size. There is no room for a full-size graphics card, extra drive bays or a standard ATX power supply. For office work, point-of-sale, digital signage, thin-client sessions and industrial control, this trade is usually the right one. For workloads that need a discrete GPU, a larger SFF or tower case remains the correct choice.

Requirement Smallest mini PC case Larger SFF case
Footprint About 10–13 cm square 20 cm or more
Volume Under 1 litre 5–20 litres
Graphics Integrated only Discrete GPU possible
Mounting VESA behind monitor Desk or floor
Power External adapter Internal ATX/SFX

Use Cases

Small cases suit fixed-position work: reception and counter terminals, kiosks, meeting-room PCs, digital signage players, laboratory data logging and thin-client desks. They also suit embedded roles where the unit sits inside a cabinet or behind a panel. Low heat output and adapter-based power make them easy to install where airflow is limited.

Thinvent Mini PCs for Small Form Factor Builds

Thinvent builds a range of mini PCs in compact chassis. The Aero Mini PC runs Intel Core i3-1215U, i5-1335U, i7-1255U and Core 5 120U processors, with memory from 8GB to 64GB DDR4 and SSD storage from 256GB to 1TB; the i7-1255U models include dual LAN. The Treo Mini PC runs either an Intel N5095A processor or an AMD Ryzen 5 7430U, with 4GB to 16GB RAM. The Micro 6 Pro Mini PC uses an ARM Cortex A55 processor with 4GB onboard RAM and 32GB eMMC storage, and runs Thinux Embedded Linux. Operating system options across the range include Windows 11 Pro, Ubuntu Linux, FreeDOS and configurations without an OS.
