What Is an Industrial PC?

An industrial PC (IPC) is a computing platform engineered for continuous operation in environments where a standard office desktop or consumer mini PC would quickly fail. The difference is not just the enclosure — it is the entire design philosophy. Industrial PCs are built around wide-temperature components, fanless or filtered cooling, vibration-resistant mounting, wide-range DC power input, and long-term component availability so that a deployment can be rolled out across hundreds of sites and serviced for years.

Industrial computers typically run 24/7, often in cabinets, kiosks, vehicles, factory floors or remote telecom shelters. Because there are no moving parts in a fanless design, dust, lint, metal filings and airborne oil mist have nowhere to accumulate — a fanless IPC simply keeps running where a fan-cooled unit would clog and throttle. This is why fanless cooling is the default choice for shop-floor, outdoor and wash-down-adjacent installations.

  • Memory and storage — 8 GB is a practical floor for Windows 11; 16 GB is the comfortable default for multi-application industrial workloads. SSD storage from 128 GB to 1 TB covers thin-client imaging through to local data buffering.

  • I/O and legacy ports — RS-232/RS-485 serial (DB9), dual Gigabit Ethernet, multiple HDMI outputs, USB 3.2 Gen 2 and USB-C are the interfaces that decide whether an IPC fits an existing installation.

  • Power input — 12 V or 9–36 V wide-range DC input allows direct operation from DIN-rail supplies or vehicle electrical systems.
