What Is an x86 Embedded Computer?
An x86 embedded computer is a compact computer built on the x86 instruction set architecture. The x86 architecture was invented by Intel and runs most personal computers, servers and data centers today. Embedded systems used x86 chips before the PC-compatible market started, and some of them appeared before the IBM PC debuted in 1981. The term x86 does not mean IBM PC compatibility alone. It describes the instruction set that the processor runs.
An x86 embedded computer runs standard x86 software, including Windows and Linux. A system with an x86 processor can therefore run the same operating systems and applications as a desktop computer, in a smaller and sealed housing for machine control, data collection and edge computing.
Key Specifications
Thinvent x86 embedded computers use Intel Core processors. Core count, maximum frequency, cache size and memory are the main specifications to compare:
| Model | Processor | Cores | Max Frequency | Cache | RAM | Storage | OS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Industrial PC IPC5 | Intel Core i5-1240P | 12 | 4.4 GHz | 12 MB | 16 GB | 512 GB SSD | Windows 11 IoT Value |
| Aero Mini PC | Intel Core i3-1215U | 6 | 4.4 GHz | 10 MB | 8 GB | 256 GB SSD | Windows 11 Pro |
| Industrial PC IPC3 | Intel Core i3-1215U | 6 | 4.4 GHz | 10 MB | 8 GB | 256 GB SSD | Ubuntu Linux |
| Industrial PC IPC5 | Intel Core i7-1255U | 10 | 4.7 GHz | 12 MB | 16 GB | 512 GB SSD | Windows 11 Pro |
| Aero Mini PC | Intel Core 5 120U | 10 | 5.0 GHz | 12 MB | 16 GB | 512 GB SSD | Windows 11 Pro |
| Treo Mini PC | Intel N5095A | 4 | 2.9 GHz | 4 MB | 4 GB | 128 GB SSD | Ubuntu Linux |
| Industrial PC IPC5 | Intel Core i7-1255U | 10 | 4.7 GHz | 12 MB | 32 GB | 1 TB SSD | Ubuntu Linux |
| Treo Mini PC | AMD Ryzen 5 7430U | 6 | 4.3 GHz | 16 MB | 16 GB | 512 GB SSD | Windows 11 Pro |
| Industrial PC IPC5 | Intel Core i5-1240P | 12 | 4.4 GHz | 12 MB | 32 GB | 1 TB SSD | Windows 11 Pro |
Industrial models add a 12V 7A adapter. Some Thinvent models include Dual LAN or Dual Band WiFi. The Thinvent range does not include x86 processors from the Moxa V3400 class, which are rated for EN 50155 railway standards. Thinvent's Micro 5R Thin Client uses an ARM Cortex A53 processor, not x86.
Use Cases
x86 embedded computers suit factory automation, machine vision, kiosks, digital signage, transport systems and edge data processing. Ubuntu Linux and Windows 11 models let engineers run existing x86 software without porting it. Models with 16 GB or 32 GB of RAM handle multi-application workloads.
Thinvent x86 Embedded Computers
Thinvent has x86 embedded computers in its Industrial PC, Aero Mini PC and Treo Mini PC lines. The IPC5 and IPC3 industrial models use Intel Core processors in a sealed housing. The Aero Mini PC and Treo Mini PC are compact systems for space-limited installations. Buyers can choose Intel Core i3, i5, i7 or Core 5 processors, or an AMD Ryzen 5 processor, with Windows 11 or Ubuntu Linux.
