Thin Client Proposal for Education Sector

Introduction

This document describes Thinvent's Thin Client solution for the education sector. It introduces the company, its products and achievements. It then proposes a solution for a typical college or secondary school.

About Thin Clients

Thin clients are computers that are optimised to work in a centralised computing environment. A typical PC consists of a processor, memory, storage, display, keyboard, etc. It is a self-contained unit. Although it is connected to a LAN, it does not use the resources of the computer network. It uses the LAN only to connect to the Internet.

Thin clients, on the other hand, are designed to use the resources of modern networks. A thin client obtains all its computing and storage capacity from the network, and contains only a minimal amount of processing capacity.

When you install thin clients, you must also purchase a terminal server. A terminal server is a standard off-the-shelf server with a terminal edition of Windows or Linux installed. When switched on, the thin clients connect to the server and display a login screen. Users enter their username and password and log in to the server. All their work then runs on the server, not on the thin client.

Thin Clients in Your Environment

Educational institutions need to provide the latest computing facilities to their students. IT knowledge is very important to a student's employability, so students should be familiar with the leading software and solutions in the industry. Institutions must therefore upgrade their PCs every two to three years to keep up.

Thin clients, on the other hand, do not need upgrades, as all their computing power comes from the server. When the system becomes slow, only the server needs an upgrade. A server typically costs twice as much as a PC and can serve about forty thin clients. Instead of paying for forty PCs every three years, the institution pays only the cost of two PCs.

Advantages of Thin Clients

Listed below are some of the advantages of thin clients:

Cost Benefits

  • Lower initial investment compared to PCs

  • Significant cost savings due to lower power consumption

  • Lower maintenance costs due to rugged design

Technical Advantages

  • More rugged than PCs – a thin client does not have moving parts

  • Resilient to dust – a thin client does not have cooling fans, so it accumulates much less dust

  • Lower power consumption – a thin client typically consumes 25W, including the display and processing unit, compared with almost 200W for a PC

  • Smaller in size – a thin client is smaller than a notebook

Operational Benefits

  • Lower failure rate due to no moving parts and lower operating temperature

  • Space saving – thin clients save valuable room space

  • Centralized management – All software and data managed from the server

  • Enhanced security – No local storage means reduced risk of data theft

Power Savings

Lower power consumption saves you Rs. 1,500 per year per computer in power bills alone. For a typical computer lab with 40 computers, this amounts to Rs. 60,000 in annual electricity savings.
