Arm Based Desktop - ARM Desktop Mini PCs and Thin Clients

What is an ARM-based desktop?

An ARM-based desktop is a compact computer that uses an ARM processor instead of an x86 chip from Intel or AMD. ARM processors use a reduced instruction set designed for low power use. This lets a small device run a full desktop with little heat and little energy use. Thinvent builds ARM-based mini PCs and thin clients that run Thinux, an embedded Linux operating system.

Key specifications

The Thinvent ARM range uses two ARM Cortex processors:

  • Cortex A53: 4 cores, up to 2.0 GHz. Used in the Micro 5R Thin Client.

  • Cortex A55: 4 cores, up to 1.9 GHz, with 1 MB cache. Used in the Micro 6 Pro Mini PC.

Memory and storage options:

  • Micro 5R: 2 GB RAM and 16 GB eMMC storage.

  • Micro 6 Pro: 4 GB RAM and 32 GB eMMC storage.

Both models use a 5V 2A power adapter and support WiFi. The Micro 5R includes WiFi 6 and Bluetooth. The Micro 6 Pro includes dual antenna WiFi.

Use cases

ARM desktops suit tasks that need a small, quiet, low-power system. Common uses include digital signage, kiosks, point-of-sale terminals, office and education desktops, and remote access through a thin client. The Micro 6 Pro has more memory and storage for heavier workloads. The Micro 5R suits basic client tasks.
