Bluetooth Motherboard

What Does "Bluetooth Motherboard" Mean?

A "Bluetooth motherboard" is a mainboard that can provide Bluetooth connectivity to the system — either because Bluetooth (usually as part of a Wi-Fi + Bluetooth combo module) is built onto the board, or because the board exposes a dedicated expansion slot that accepts a Bluetooth module. In almost all modern designs, Bluetooth is not a separate chip soldered on its own; it shares a single radio module with Wi-Fi, which is why you will see the two listed together as "Wi-Fi + BT" or "WLAN/BT combo."

There are three common ways Bluetooth reaches a motherboard:

  • Soldered combo module — a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth radio is integrated directly on the board, with antenna connectors (typically IPEX/u.FL) routed to the rear or to an external antenna bracket.

  • M.2 2230 Key-E slot — the most common upgrade path today. A Key-E M.2 card carries both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; the Bluetooth side is wired internally over USB 2.0 to the chipset, so no external cable is needed beyond the antennas.

  • Mini PCIe or USB header — older or highly ruggedised boards use a mini PCIe slot or a USB 2.0 pin header for a plug-in Bluetooth module or dongle.

Key Specifications to Check

Parameter What to look for
Bluetooth version 4.2 (legacy), 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 — newer versions improve range, throughput and coexistence with Wi-Fi
Slot type M.2 2230 Key-E, mini PCIe, or USB 2.0 header
Host interface USB 2.0 (Bluetooth) + PCIe (Wi-Fi) for M.2 combo cards
Antenna IPEX/u.FL connectors; dual antennas for Wi-Fi, one shared path for BT
Coexistence Shared 2.4 GHz band — look for modules with good BT/WLAN coexistence to avoid dropped packets
Profiles supported HID, A2DP, HFP, SPP (serial port profile) for industrial peripherals
Operating system support Drivers for Windows 11/10, Ubuntu Linux and other Linux distributions

Bluetooth is a short-range, low-power wireless standard operating in the 2.4 GHz ISM band. Bluetooth Classic (BR/EDR) is used for audio
