What "Cabinet" Means in Computing Today
A computer cabinet is the enclosure that houses, protects and cools the electronics that make up a working system. In larger installations the term usually refers to a rack cabinet or electrical control cabinet — a steel box mounted on a wall or standing on a floor — that holds a PC, a thin client, a switch or a controller alongside power supplies and terminal blocks. In smaller deployments, "cabinet" simply means the chassis itself: the metal case that holds the motherboard, storage and I/O.
The critical design question is always the same: how does the heat get out, and how does the dust stay out? Traditional cabinets solve this with fans, filters and vents. Fanless cabinets solve it with a sealed metal body that conducts heat to the outside surface and has no moving air path at all. The second approach matters most in dusty workshops, flour mills, textile plants, kitchens, outdoor kiosks and any site where airborne particles or humidity would eventually choke a fan.
