What Is Thin Client Software?
Thin client software lets a device run applications, desktops or IT environments that are hosted on a central server. The device does little processing itself. The server does most of the work, and the user sees the result on the local screen. This model reduces the need to install and maintain software on every user's machine.
In web-based deployments, a thin client removes the need to distribute and install client software on each user's computer. The client only needs a browser or a remote access protocol to connect. Thin clients support virtual desktop (VDI), desktop-as-a-service (DaaS), software-as-a-service (SaaS) and web applications.
Key Specifications to Check
When you choose hardware for thin client software, check the processor, memory and storage first. The Thinvent range includes three types of platform:
-
ARM Cortex-A53 and Cortex-A55 processors on the Micro 5 and Micro 6 Pro. These run Thinux embedded Linux and suit low-power endpoints with one HDMI output.
-
Intel N100 processors on the Treo, IPC1 and Aero models. These have 4 cores, up to 3.4 GHz and 6 MB cache, and run Ubuntu Linux, Thinux or Windows.
-
Intel Core i3-1215U, i5-1240P and Core 5 120U processors on the IPC3, IPC5 and Aero models. These have 6 to 12 cores and 8 to 16 GB of RAM for heavier workloads.
| Model | Processor | RAM | Storage | OS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Micro 5 | ARM Cortex-A53 | 2 GB | 16 GB eMMC | Thinux |
| Micro 6 Pro | ARM Cortex-A55 | 4 GB | 64 GB eMMC | Thinux |
| Treo (Ubuntu) | Intel N100 | 4 GB | 128 GB SSD | Ubuntu Linux |
| Treo (Thinux) | Intel N100 | 4 GB | 128 GB SSD | Thinux |
| IPC1 | Intel N100 | 4 GB | 128 GB SSD | Ubuntu Linux |
| IPC3 | Intel Core i3-1215U | 8 GB | 256 GB SSD | Ubuntu Linux |
| IPC5 | Intel Core i5-1240P | 16 GB | 512 GB SSD | Windows 11 IoT |
| Aero (Win 11 Pro) | Intel Core i3-1215U | 8 GB | 256 GB SSD | Windows 11 Pro |
| Aero (Core 5) | Intel Core 5 120U | 16 GB | 512 GB SSD | Windows 11 Pro |
| Aero (N100, no OS) | Intel N100 | 32 GB | 256 GB SSD | None |
Use Cases
Thin client hardware suits offices, schools, clinics, retail counters and factory floors. Low-power models with Thinux or Linux fit kiosks and single-application terminals. Intel Core models with Windows fit users who need full desktop applications while the data stays on a central server.
Thinvent Products for Thin Client Software
The Thinvent range includes thin clients and mini PCs for these deployments. The Micro 5 and Micro 6 Pro run Thinux for dedicated endpoint use. The Treo Mini PC and Aero Mini PC give more processing power for virtual desktop sessions. The IPC1, IPC3 and IPC5 industrial PCs are built for demanding environments and run Ubuntu Linux or Windows.
