What Is a Compact Embedded PC?
A compact embedded PC is a small-format computer built to run a dedicated function inside a machine, kiosk, vehicle, or control cabinet rather than sit on a desk. Unlike a consumer desktop, an embedded PC is designed around continuous operation: it boots unattended, tolerates wide temperature ranges, survives vibration and dust, and is typically mounted with brackets, DIN rail, or VESA plates where space is measured in millimetres. "Compact" refers to the chassis footprint, and "embedded" describes the deployment model — the system is part of a larger product or process, not a general-purpose workstation.
The core design choice in this class is cooling. Fanless embedded PCs use the enclosure itself as a heatsink, so there is no fan to pull dust into the chassis, no bearing to wear out, and no airflow to filter. That makes them suitable for environments where a standard PC would clog within months: production floors, food processing areas, outdoor cabinets, and 24/7 unattended installations. Where a fan is used, it is usually a wide-temperature, ball-bearing unit with a serviceable filter.
