What Is a Computer with SSD?
A computer with SSD uses a solid-state drive instead of a spinning hard disk to store the operating system, applications and data. An SSD has no moving parts — no platters, no actuator arm, no spinning motor — so data is read and written electronically from NAND flash memory. That single architectural difference changes how a machine feels in daily use: boot times drop from a minute or more to a handful of seconds, applications launch almost instantly, and the system stays responsive even when several programs are competing for disk access. For industrial, commercial and thin-client deployments, the lack of mechanical parts also means far greater tolerance for vibration, shock and temperature swings.
SSD Interfaces and Form Factors Explained
Not all SSDs are equal, and the interface determines how much performance the drive can deliver. The table below summarises the common options found in mini PCs, thin clients, all-in-one PCs and industrial computers.
| Interface | Typical Form Factor | Sequential Read (approx.) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| SATA III | 2.5" drive bay | Up to ~550 MB/s | Widely compatible, easy to swap, common in legacy-style chassis |
| M.2 SATA | M.2 2242 / 2280 | Up to ~550 MB/s | Compact, same speed ceiling as SATA III |
| M.2 NVMe (PCIe 3.0 x4) | M.2 2242 / 2280 | Up to ~3,500 MB/s | Low latency, best for OS and database workloads |
| M.2 NVMe (PCIe 4.0 x4) | M.2 2280 | Up to ~7,000 MB/s | Highest throughput, requires a compatible platform |
Capacity is the other key specification. A 128GB SSD is sufficient for a thin client or a kiosk running a single application. 256GB and 512GB suit general office and POS workloads. 1024GB (1TB) and above are appropriate where local logs, image archives, CAD files or video are stored on the device itself. In most industrial designs the SSD resides in an easily accessible bay or M.2 slot, so capacity can be specified at purchase and upgraded later.
