The modem converts digital data from the PC into a signal that can travel over a telephone line, coaxial cable, fibre, or a cellular radio link — and converts incoming signals back into data the computer can use. Depending on the design, the modem may be a card fitted inside the chassis, a module on an M.2 or Mini PCIe slot, or an external unit linked over USB or a serial port.
Modern buyers rarely mean dial-up any more.
