What Is an Industrial PC?
An industrial PC (IPC) is a computer engineered for continuous operation in environments where a standard office desktop would fail. Instead of plastic enclosures and small cooling fans that pull in dust, industrial PCs use metal chassis, wide-temperature components, and fanless passive cooling. They are built to run 24/7 for years, tolerate vibration, and mount inside cabinets, kiosks, control panels, or on DIN rails.
The defining characteristics are reliability and longevity rather than raw benchmark speed. Industrial systems typically accept a wide DC input range (commonly 9–36V or a fixed 12V supply), offer watchdog timers and auto power-on after power loss, and expose legacy I/O such as RS-232/RS-485 serial ports, digital I/O, and dual Gigabit Ethernet for machine networks.
