Instead of prioritising thin styling and low cost, an industrial computer is designed around three requirements: uninterrupted uptime, tolerance of heat, dust, vibration and electrical noise, and long-term availability of the same model so that a machine built five years ago can still be serviced or duplicated today. Processor selection typically favours efficiency-class silicon — Intel Celeron, Intel Processor N-series, or low-power Core i3 and i5 parts — because lower thermal design power means a sealed, fanless enclosure can dissipate heat without any moving parts to clog with dust. Memory and storage are usually socketed and field-replaceable, and storage is often eMMC or an M.2 SSD rather than a spinning disk, since there are no bearings to wear out and no heads to shock out of alignment.
