An industrial computer (often called an industrial PC or IPC) is a computing platform engineered to run continuously in environments where a standard office desktop would struggle — factory floors, control cabinets, kiosks, vehicles and outdoor enclosures. The defining characteristics are a fanless or sealed chassis, wide-input DC power, long-life components, and a wide set of legacy industrial I/O such as RS-232/RS-485 serial ports, GPIO and multiple display outputs. Because these systems are expected to stay in service for many years, they are usually specified with soldered or well-supported memory and storage, and an operating system chosen for long-term servicing.
What to Look For in the Specification
The processor decides how much headroom you have for multi-tasking, vision workloads, databases or virtual machines. Modern Intel® Core™ i3, i5 and N-series chips offer a strong balance of performance-per-watt, which matters in a sealed enclosure with no fan moving air across the heatsink. Memory and storage should be sized for the workload — 16 GB is a comfortable baseline for Windows-based HMI, SCADA or edge-analytics tasks, while lighter Linux workloads can run well on 8 GB. Watch the I/O count as well: serial ports, USB 3.2 Gen 2 and dual HDMI are the interfaces that most industrial deployments actually consume.
