Why "Lost Connection to the RD" Happens
"Lost connection to the RD" almost always refers to an interrupted Remote Desktop (RDP) session — the RD Session Host, RD Gateway or the local Remote Desktop client drops the link and the user sees an error such as "Your Remote Desktop Services session has ended" or "An internal error has occurred." In most deployments the cause is not the RDP protocol itself but one of four layers: the network path, the client device, the host's session/timeout policy, or power and thermal stability. Diagnosing in that order resolves the vast majority of recurring disconnects.
The Four Common Causes
1. Network instability. Wi-Fi roaming, consumer-grade switches, duplicate IP addresses, or a single-NIC client sitting behind an unmanaged switch will drop idle RDP
