Matx Small Case

What Is a Micro-ATX Small Case?

Micro-ATX (often abbreviated mATX or µATX) is a motherboard form factor standardised at 244 × 244 mm, smaller than full ATX (305 × 244 mm) but larger than Mini-ITX (170 × 170 mm). A "micro-ATX small case" is a chassis designed around this board size — compact enough to fit into space-constrained installations, yet large enough to accept a reasonable number of expansion cards, multiple storage drives and standard ATX power supplies.

The appeal of mATX small cases lies in balance. They occupy far less desk, cabinet or DIN-rail space than a tower, but unlike ultra-compact Mini-ITX enclosures they still offer two to four PCIe expansion slots. That makes them popular for industrial control cabinets, kiosk builds, laboratory benches, digital signage players and edge computing nodes where you need a serial card, a capture card or a second network interface alongside the mainboard.

Key Considerations for Compact mATX Builds

When selecting a small case for a micro-ATX board, the practical constraints are thermal headroom, expansion clearance and mounting flexibility. A compact enclosure restricts airflow, so fanless designs — where the chassis itself acts as a heat sink — are often preferred in dusty, hot or vibration-prone environments. Look for cases with:

  • Ventilated panels or heat-spreading fins for passive dissipation

  • Mounting options such as VESA, wall bracket or DIN rail

  • Drive bays supporting 2.5" SSD and, where needed, 3.5" HDD

  • Front I/O cutouts for USB, serial and display connectors

  • Wide-input DC power (commonly 12V) rather than a bulky internal PSU

For industrial deployments, ingress protection, operating temperature range (often 0–50 °C or wider) and shock/vibration tolerance matter more than RGB lighting or glass side panels.

Micro-ATX vs Other Small Form Factors

Form Factor Board Size Typical Expansion Slots Best Suited For
Mini-ITX 170 × 170 mm 1 Ultra-compact, single-purpose nodes
Micro-ATX 244 × 244 mm 2–4 Compact industrial PCs, kiosks, edge
Mini-DTX 203 × 170 mm 2 Niche small builds
Full ATX 305 × 244 mm 4–7 Workstations, servers

If your application needs more than one add-in card but must still fit inside a shallow cabinet, micro-ATX is usually the sweet spot.

Where Micro-ATX Small Cases Are Used

Typical deployments include factory-floor HMIs, machine vision controllers, retail self-service terminals, medical carts, telecom edge cabinets and laboratory data-logging rigs. In each case the requirement is the same: a compact, serviceable enclosure that houses a capable processor, adequate RAM and storage, and the I/O the job demands — without demanding a full equipment rack.

Thinvent's Industrial PCs in Compact Form Factors

Thinvent builds industrial computers, mini PCs, thin clients and all-in-one PCs for exactly these environments. Our IPC3 series, for example, pairs an Intel® Core™ i3-1215U processor (6 cores, up to 4.4 GHz, 10 MB cache) with 16 GB DDR4 RAM and up to 1 TB SSD in a rugged, fanless industrial chassis, with options for quad DB9 serial ports, Windows 11 Professional, Windows 11 IoT, DOS or Thinux™ Embedded Linux. If your project calls for a compact micro-ATX-class industrial enclosure, our team can help you match the right form factor, I/O and operating system to your deployment.
