What Is Micro ATX?
Micro ATX, also written as mATX or µATX, is a motherboard form factor. It was introduced in December 1997. A form factor defines the board's dimensions, power supply type, mounting hole locations, and rear port layout. The maximum size of a Micro ATX motherboard is 9.6 × 9.6 in (244 × 244 mm). Some boards using the designation measure 244 × 205 mm (9.6 × 8.1 in).
Key Specifications
Micro ATX is a smaller version of the standard ATX board. An ATX board is about 25% larger. Micro ATX keeps ATX compatibility and fits in smaller cases. It supports fewer expansion slots than ATX. Smaller form factors such as Mini-ITX are smaller still and suit compact builds.
Comparison of Common Form Factors
| Form factor | Maximum size | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| ATX | Standard full size | Full towers, maximum expansion |
| Micro ATX | 244 × 244 mm | Compact desktops, balanced expansion |
| Mini-ITX | 170 × 170 mm | Very small builds |
Use Cases
Micro ATX suits office desktops, small workstations, and compact industrial enclosures where space is limited but some expansion is needed.
Thinvent Products
Thinvent does not list a Micro ATX motherboard product. Thinvent's range of compact systems uses Intel and AMD processors in small chassis, including the Aero Mini PC with Intel Core i3-1215U, the Treo Mini PC with AMD Ryzen 5 7430U, and the Industrial PC IPC5 with Intel Core i5-1240P and Intel Core i7-1255U. The Micro 5R Thin Client uses an ARM Cortex A53 processor.
