Passiv Gek

What "Passiv Gekühlt" Means

"Passiv gekühlt" is German for "passively cooled" — a design approach in which a computer has no fans, no rotating parts and no vents through which air is forced. Instead of blowing air across a heatsink, a passively cooled (fanless) industrial PC moves heat away from the processor through conduction: the CPU sits against a metal block, which is bolted to a thick aluminium chassis with cooling fins. The enclosure itself becomes the heatsink, radiating heat into the surrounding air by natural convection.

This is the opposite of a conventional desktop or server, where one or more fans push air through the case. Removing those fans removes the single most common point of failure in an industrial computer — the bearing in a small, fast-spinning fan that is constantly pulling in dust, metal particles, oil mist or textile fibres from the factory floor.

Why Fanless Matters on the Factory Floor

The main reasons engineers specify passively cooled systems are reliability and contamination resistance. A fanless chassis can be fully sealed to IP-rated levels, so it can be hosed down, wiped with solvents or installed in a washdown area. There is no airflow path for conductive dust, so the board does not accumulate the layer of grime that eventually causes short circuits. There is also no fan noise, which matters in clean rooms, laboratories, hospitals, recording studios and any operator station where a constant whine is unacceptable.

Fanless designs also tolerate vibration better, because there are no bearings or blades to fatigue, and they avoid spreading airborne contaminants into a clean environment. The trade-off is thermal headroom: a passively cooled enclosure must be large enough to dissipate the heat the processor generates, so fanless systems typically use lower-TDP processors and rely on wide operating temperature ratings rather than peak clock speed.

Key Specifications to Look For

Specification Typical Fanless Industrial PC Why It Matters
Cooling Passive, conduction through chassis No moving parts, no dust ingress
Processor TDP 6 W – 15 W class (e.g. Intel® Core™ i3-1215U, N100, N150) Heat output the chassis can dissipate
Operating temperature 0 °C to 50 °C or wider Headroom for unventilated cabinets
Mounting DIN rail, VESA, wall bracket Fits inside control panels
Storage SSD, no rotating disk Shock and vibration tolerance
I/O Serial (RS-232/485), dual Ethernet, HDMI PLC, sensor and display connectivity
Power 12 V or 9–36 V DC wide input Works from industrial DC rails

Where Passively Cooled Computers Are Used

Fanless industrial PCs are common in CNC and machine-tool control cabinets, where oil mist and chips are present; in food and beverage plants that are cleaned with water and chemicals; in pharmaceutical and semiconductor clean rooms; in outdoor kiosks, traffic and energy cabinets exposed to dust and temperature swings; and in retail and hospitality installations where silence is part of the customer experience. Digital signage players, thin client terminals and edge gateways are also frequently fanless, because they run continuously and are often mounted where nobody services them.

When selecting a passively cooled system, match the processor TDP to the enclosure's dissipation capacity, check the certified ambient temperature range rather than the "room temperature" figure, and confirm that the storage is solid state. If the workload needs sustained heavy multi-core performance, a larger fanless chassis with a higher-TDP processor is usually a better answer than a small box running at its thermal limit.

Thinvent's Passively Cooled Range

Thinvent builds fanless industrial computers, mini PCs, thin clients and all-in-one PCs designed for exactly these environments. The Thinvent® Industrial PC IPC3, for example, pairs an Intel® Core™ i3-1215U processor (6 cores, up to 4.4 GHz, 10 MB cache) with 16 GB DDR4 RAM and a 1 TB SSD in a sealed, passively cooled chassis, and is available with quad DB9 serial ports for PLC and legacy equipment integration, dual Gigabit Ethernet, and a choice of Windows 11 Professional, Windows 11 IoT Value, DOS, or Thinux™ Embedded Linux. Options without wireless radios suit sites where RF is restricted. Explore the range to find a silent, service-free system for your control cabinet, kiosk or operator station.
