Rs485 To Ethernet Converter - Industrial PCs With Serial and Ethernet Ports

What Is an RS-485 to Ethernet Converter?

An RS-485 to Ethernet converter, also called a device server or serial-to-Ethernet gateway, links RS-485 serial devices to an Ethernet network. It takes the serial data from RS-485 equipment and sends it over TCP/IP, so a PC, server or cloud platform can read and control those devices remotely. Many converters also support Modbus protocol conversion, which lets legacy Modbus devices join modern Ethernet networks. Some models add a second serial port, such as RS-232, for devices that use different protocols.

Key Specifications to Check

When you choose a converter, check the number of serial channels, the supported protocols, the Ethernet speed and the operating temperature range. A single-channel unit suits one RS-485 device or bus. A dual-port unit lets you connect RS-232 and RS-485 devices at the same time. Industrial models are built for wide temperature ranges and rugged environments.

Common Use Cases

Converters are used in factory automation, building management, energy metering, water treatment and process control. In each case the converter lets a central computer poll sensors, meters or drives over an Ethernet network, instead of running long serial cables to each device.

Thinvent Products for RS-485 to Ethernet Integration

Thinvent does not make an RS-485 to Ethernet converter. Thinvent PCs can act as the controlling computer in a system that uses one. Their Ethernet and serial connectivity lets them receive data from a converter and run monitoring or control software. The Thinvent range includes Industrial PCs, Aero and Treo Mini PCs and a Micro 5R Thin Client. The Industrial PC IPC5 and IPC3 models are built for industrial use. Choose a model by processor, memory, storage and operating system to match your software needs.
