What Is an Industrial PC?
An industrial PC (IPC) is a computer engineered for continuous operation in environments where a standard desktop or office PC would fail. The difference is not raw speed — it is thermal design, mechanical ruggedness, and power stability. Industrial computers typically use fanless passive cooling, wide-temperature components, shock-resistant storage, and a wide DC input range so they can run 24/7 on factory floors, in outdoor cabinets, in vehicles, and on retail shop floors without a filtered, air-conditioned room.
Because there are no moving parts in the cooling path, a fanless IPC avoids drawing dust, metal particles, and humidity into the chassis. That single design decision is the main reason fanless systems outlast fan-cooled equivalents in dusty or greasy settings, and why they need less scheduled maintenance.
Key Specifications to Evaluate
| Specification | What It Means in Practice |
|---|---|
| Processor | Intel® Celeron®, N-series, Core™ i3 and Core™ i5 options cover light signage up to multi-app industrial control |
| Cores / frequency | 4 to 12 cores, up to ~4.4 GHz for responsive multi-window and database workloads |
| Memory | 4 GB for kiosks and thin client duty, 8–16 GB for SCADA/HMI, 32–64 GB for virtualisation |
| Storage | Fanless SSDs from 128 GB to 1 TB; no spinning disks means no vibration failures |
| Cooling | Passive, fanless chassis — dust-tolerant, silent, no filter changes |
| Serial ports | DB9 RS-232/RS-485 for PLCs, weighbridges, meters, legacy controllers |
| Networking | Dual Gigabit Ethernet for network segmentation or redundancy |
| Display output | 1–2× HDMI, often plus VGA or DisplayPort for dual-screen operator stations |
| Power | Wide-range DC input (commonly 12 V) with surge and reverse-polarity protection |
| Mounting | DIN rail, VESA, wall bracket or panel-mount options |
