A SKU (stock keeping unit) is the unique identifier a manufacturer assigns to one exact, orderable configuration of a product. In consumer electronics a SKU is often just a colour or storage variant, but for an industrial computer it encodes far more: the processor model, core count, memory and storage capacity, operating system, expansion options, and the chassis or port layout. Because industrial buyers specify machines to fit an existing control cabinet, SCADA stack, or kiosk enclosure, the SKU is effectively the contract between the datasheet and the unit that arrives on the pallet. Reading a SKU left to right tells you the performance tier first (processor and memory), then the platform decisions (OS and I/O), and finally the deployment details (power and mounting). That ordering is deliberate: the first three segments drive the bill of materials cost, while the last three drive compatibility with the site.

In a fleet of hundreds of industrial PCs, a single ambiguous line on a purchase order can mean mixed images, mismatched drivers, and a service technician on site with the wrong spare. Accurate SKUs let procurement teams re-order the exact same machine years later, let IT departments image devices in batches, and let maintenance crews swap a failed unit without re-qualifying software. They also simplify warranty and RMA handling, because the vendor can look up the original build rather than guessing from a photo of the label.
