Small+Compact+Computer - Small Compact Computers: Fanless Mini PCs & Thin Clients

A small compact computer is a fully functional PC built into a chassis measured in centimetres rather than litres — typically anywhere from a pocket-sized 0.3-litre mini PC to a rugged 2-litre industrial box. The category covers desktop mini PCs, thin clients, all-in-one PCs and DIN-rail or VESA-mountable industrial computers. What they share is a deliberate trade-off: desktop-class processors and standard I/O packed into a footprint that fits behind a monitor, inside a control cabinet, or on a kiosk shelf, with no tower case and often no cooling fan at all.

What Defines a Small Form Factor Computer

Size is only one axis. A genuinely useful compact computer balances four things:

  • Thermals and cooling. Fanless designs move heat through an aluminium chassis instead of a fan, so there is no dust intake, no bearing noise and no moving part to fail. This is what makes them viable in dusty workshops, food processing areas and 24/7 control rooms.

  • Power draw. Low-wattage platforms (6 W to 28 W TDP) allow 12 V DC input, which suits vehicle, solar and battery-backed installations.

  • Mounting. VESA 75/100 patterns, DIN rail clips and wall brackets let the machine disappear into the environment rather than sit on a desk.

  • I/O that stays useful. Multiple serial ports, dual Gigabit Ethernet, dual HDMI and stacked USB 3.2 ports matter far more here than expansion slots.
