What Is a Sun Ray 2 Thin Client?
The Sun Ray 2 is a zero-administration virtual display client made by Sun Microsystems and later sold under Oracle. It connects to a central server and shows the desktop and applications that run on that server. The device itself does little processing. Its job is to display the session and send keyboard and mouse input back to the server.
Key Specifications
Based on the facts available for this query, the Sun Ray 2 supports Sun monitors in 19-inch, 20.1-inch and 24-inch sizes. It also supports third-party monitors through an included HD15 adapter, and standard VGA-compatible displays. The device uses a keyboard and mouse as standard input.
Sun Ray clients work with several server platforms, including Oracle Solaris, Linux, UNIX, Microsoft Windows, AS/400 and mainframes. In Kiosk mode, the Sun Ray software can start a full-screen Windows session through the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) or the VMware View client.
Use Cases
Thin clients of this type suit shared-desktop environments. Typical uses include call centers, healthcare workstations, library terminals, retail kiosks and manufacturing floors. Centralised management means that software updates and user data stay on the server, not on each endpoint.
