Thin Cl

What Is a Thin Client?

A thin client is a compact, low-maintenance computing device that relies on a central server or virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) to do most of the heavy processing. The endpoint itself handles display output, keyboard and mouse input, and network communication, while applications, storage and compute power live in the data centre or cloud. This model is popular because it centralises management, reduces the cost and complexity of each desk, and keeps sensitive data off the endpoint.

Thin clients are typically small, quiet and power-efficient. Many are fanless, using passive cooling so there are no moving parts to draw in dust or fail. They usually boot quickly, can be locked down to a single purpose, and are simple to re-image or replace when something goes wrong. Because the endpoint does little local work, even modest processors are more than sufficient for everyday tasks.

How Thin Clients Work

Most thin clients connect to a server through standard remote display protocols. Common options include Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) for Windows environments, Citrix HDX for Citrix deployments, and VMware Blast or PCoIP for VMware Horizon. Linux-based endpoints may also use VNC, SPICE or vendor-specific clients. The endpoint needs a stable network link, enough memory to run the protocol client smoothly, and a display output that matches the monitor.

Consideration Typical Thin Client Traditional Desktop PC
Processing location Server / cloud Local
Local storage Minimal or none Large local drive
Management Centralised Per-machine
Power draw Low Higher
Moving parts Often none (fanless) Fan and spinning disk
Data security Data stays in the data centre Data on the endpoint

Where Thin Clients Are Used

Thin clients suit any environment where many similar workstations are needed and central control matters. Typical deployments include call centres and help desks, hospital and clinic workstations, bank branches and back offices, retail point-of-sale and kiosk terminals, school and university computer labs, and factory or warehouse terminals running shop-floor applications. They are also common in offices that have moved to virtual desktops, where staff need a reliable endpoint but no local horsepower.

Choosing the Right Thin Client

Start with the protocol your infrastructure uses, then match the processor, memory and storage to the workload. A lightweight RDP session needs far less than a graphics-heavy virtual desktop. Check the display outputs you need, the number of USB ports for peripherals and barcode scanners, and whether you require dual Ethernet for network redundancy. For industrial or outdoor settings, look for fanless, wide-temperature designs with solid-state storage. Operating system choice matters too: Windows-based endpoints integrate tightly with Microsoft environments, while Linux endpoints can be leaner and more customisable.

Thinvent Products for Thin Client and Endpoint Deployments

Thinvent builds mini PCs, thin clients, industrial computers and all-in-one PCs designed for exactly these roles. Our range covers Intel-based and ARM-based platforms, fanless chassis for dusty or hot environments, dual-Ethernet options for redundancy, and flexible operating system choices including Windows 11 Pro, Ubuntu Linux and our Thinux embedded Linux. Whether you are rolling out a VDI fleet, kiosk network or shop-floor terminal, Thinvent offers endpoint hardware that is compact, reliable and easy to manage at scale.
