What is a thin client?
A thin client is a compact computer that runs a remote desktop or server-hosted applications. Most of the processing happens on a central server or in the cloud. The thin client shows the screen, takes keyboard and mouse input, and sends it back to the server. Because it stores little data and has few moving parts, a thin client is simple to deploy, manage and replace.
Key specifications
The Thinvent thin client range uses two processor families. The Micro 5R uses an ARM Cortex A53 processor with 4 cores, a maximum frequency of 2.0 GHz, 2 GB of onboard RAM and 16 GB of eMMC storage. It runs Thinux embedded Linux and includes WiFi 6 and Bluetooth.
The Neo S series uses an Intel Celeron J1900 processor with 4 cores, a maximum frequency of 2.4 GHz and 2 MB of cache. Neo S models offer 4 GB or 8 GB of DDR3 RAM and 32 GB, 128 GB or 256 GB of SSD storage. Neo S models do not include WiFi.

| Cores | 4 | 4 |
| Max frequency | 2.0 GHz | 2.4 GHz |
| Memory | 2 GB | 4 GB or 8 GB DDR3 |
| Storage | 16 GB eMMC | 32 GB MLC SSD up to 256 GB SSD |
| Wireless | WiFi 6, Bluetooth | No WiFi |
| Operating system | Thinux embedded Linux | Ubuntu Linux, Thinux, Windows 11 Pro, DOS, or no OS |
Operating system options
Neo S models are available with Ubuntu Linux, Thinux embedded Linux, Windows 11 Pro, DOS, or without an operating system. Buyers who run their own Windows or Linux image can select the model without an OS. The Micro 5R ships with Thinux embedded Linux.
Use cases
Thin clients suit call centres, point-of-sale terminals, kiosks, digital signage, library and classroom workstations, and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) deployments. Their low power draw and small size reduce energy use and free up desk space.
Thinvent thin clients
Thinvent has the Micro 5R ARM-based thin client and a range of Neo S Intel Celeron J1900 thin clients. Choose the Micro 5R for compact, WiFi 6 connected deployments on embedded Linux. Choose a Neo S model for x86 compatibility, a choice of operating system, and 4 GB or 8 GB of memory.
