A virtual desktop thin client is a compact endpoint device that connects to a desktop that runs on a remote server or in the cloud. The device does not store the user's applications or files. It displays the remote desktop on a monitor and sends keyboard and mouse input back to the server. Because most of the work runs on the server, a thin client needs only a modest processor, a small amount of memory and a simple operating system.
Thinvent has thin clients in two processor families. The Thinvent Neo S series uses the Intel Celeron J1900 processor, a quad-core chip with a maximum frequency of 2.4 GHz and 2 MB of cache. Neo S models are configured with 4 GB or 8 GB of DDR3 RAM and 32 GB, 128 GB or 256 GB of SSD storage. The Thinvent Micro 5R uses an ARM Cortex A53 processor with four cores at up to 2.0 GHz. It has 2 GB of onboard RAM, 16 GB of eMMC storage, WiFi 6, Bluetooth and an HDMI 2.0 output.
The table below compares the two processor platforms in this range.
| Feature | Micro 5R | Neo S |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | ARM Cortex A53 | Intel Celeron J1900 |
| Cores | 4 | 4 |
| Maximum frequency | 2.0 GHz | 2.4 GHz |
| Memory | 2 GB onboard | 4 GB or 8 GB DDR3 |
| Storage | 16 GB eMMC | 32 GB to 256 GB SSD |
| Wireless | WiFi 6 and Bluetooth | No WiFi |
| Operating system | Thinux embedded Linux | Ubuntu Linux, Windows 11 Pro, DOS or no OS |
Choose the Neo S with 8 GB of memory when users run several sessions or heavier office applications. Choose the 4 GB model when each user runs a single lightweight session. The Micro 5R suits basic virtual desktop use where a small footprint and wireless connectivity matter most.
Thin clients are used in offices, call centres, schools, retail counters, reception areas and kiosks. Administrators also use them to reduce hardware upkeep, since the software and data stay on the server.
Thinvent Thin Clients for Virtual Desktops
Thinvent builds the Micro 5R with Thinux embedded Linux and the Neo S with Ubuntu Linux, Windows 11 Pro or Windows 11 Professional, DOS, or no operating system so that you can install your own. Every Neo S model is supplied with a 19V power adapter. The Micro 5R includes a 5V 2A adapter.
