What Is an Ultra Compact PC?
An ultra compact PC is a complete x86 computer that fits in the palm of your hand or behind a monitor, yet runs a full desktop operating system such as Windows 11 Pro, Ubuntu Linux or an embedded Linux build. Instead of a tower case, expansion cards and a large power supply, these systems use a small chassis, an external 12V DC adapter and soldered or SO-DIMM memory to shrink the footprint to roughly one litre or less. The result is a machine that can be mounted on a DIN rail, a VESA bracket, inside a kiosk or under a counter, where a conventional desktop simply would not fit.
The trade-off is deliberate: fewer expansion slots and a lower thermal budget, in exchange for silent operation, low power draw and much longer service life in dusty or hot environments. Because there are no moving parts other than the storage (and often not even that, when an SSD or eMMC is used), an ultra compact fanless PC avoids the single most common failure point of ordinary desktops - a clogged, worn-out cooling fan.
