What is an arm64 PC?

An arm64 PC is a computer built on a 64-bit processor from the ARM architecture family. AArch64, also written as ARM64, is the 64-bit version of the ARM architecture. It was introduced in 2011 with the ARMv8 architecture and later became part of the ARMv9 series. Windows 11 runs on arm64 processors through the Arm64 edition of Windows, called Windows on Arm.

How arm64 differs from x64

Arm64 and x64 are two different processor instruction sets. An x64 processor is an x86-family chip, such as an Intel Core or AMD Ryzen processor. An arm64 processor follows the ARM design. Software must be built for the matching instruction set. To check whether a Windows 11 PC is arm64 or x64, open Settings, go to System, then About, and read the system type. System Information and Command Prompt also show the processor type.

Where arm64 PCs are used

Arm64 processors are used in mobile devices, embedded systems, thin clients and a growing number of laptops and desktops. Applications should be checked for native arm64 support before purchase, because x64 apps run on Windows on Arm through emulation.

Thinvent products on this page
