Compute Module 5 - Compact System-on-Module for Embedded Computing

A Compute Module 5 (CM5) is a compact, high-performance System-on-Module (SoM) designed for embedded applications. It packages the core computing components—including the processor, memory, storage, and essential controllers—onto a single, small-form-factor board. This module is designed to be integrated into a custom carrier board, which provides the specific power, connectivity, and I/O interfaces required for the final product. This approach allows developers to leverage a proven, powerful computing core while customizing the physical and electrical design for their specific application, significantly reducing development time and complexity compared to designing a system from scratch.

Key Specifications and Architecture

Based on industry-standard designs like the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5, a typical CM5-class module features a powerful 64-bit Arm processor, such as a quad-core Cortex-A76, running at speeds up to 2.4 GHz. It integrates LPDDR4 RAM (with options commonly ranging from 2GB to 16GB) and eMMC flash storage on-board. The module exposes a high-density connector that provides interfaces for PCIe, dual HDMI 2.0/2.1 outputs capable of 4Kp60, Gigabit Ethernet, USB, and GPIO. Many variants also include an optional, fully certified wireless module for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. The standard form factor is compact, typically around 55mm x 40mm.

Primary Use Cases and Applications

Compute Module 5 solutions are ideal for scalable, embedded computing projects where reliability, compact size, and custom I/O are paramount.

  • Industrial Automation & IoT Gateways: Deployed in machinery control, data acquisition systems, and edge computing nodes within factories.

  • Digital Signage & Kiosks: Powers interactive displays and information points, benefiting from robust multimedia support.

  • Medical Devices: Used in portable diagnostic equipment and monitoring systems where a certified, stable computing core is needed.

  • Thin Clients & Cloud Terminals: Forms the heart of secure, managed endpoints for virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI).
